The short version
You can use HeartGuard without an account. If you create one, we store what you need for it to work: your email, your name, your votes, comments and watchlist, and anything you add to your profile. We don't sell your data or show you ads.
What we store
- Your account: email address and password. Passwords are stored as a secure hash by our login provider; we never see them.
- Your profile: your first name and surname, your sex and, if you add them, a profile picture, whether you're a parent and your church role. Your first name with the first letter of your surname (“Anna L.”), picture and role are shown with your comments; your full surname is never public; being a parent shows as “Mother”, “Father” or “Parent” (for example “Mother · Youth leader”). Your sex is otherwise only counted in totals (“Women: 85% appropriate”). Your public profile shows the same details with your comments and how many people found them helpful; it is kept out of search engines.
- Your denomination, only if you choose to give it. This is information about your religious beliefs, which data protection law treats as especially sensitive. We store it only with your explicit consent, keep it private unless you switch on “Show it publicly” (then it appears on your comments and profile and is counted in totals such as “Lutheran: 80% appropriate”), and you can remove it at any time in Account settings.
- Votes and comments: whether you found a title appropriate, and any comment. Comments are public, shown with your name, picture and role, and the youngest age you'd show the title to if you gave one. Individual votes aren't public; we show only totals.
- What you noticed in a film: your yes or no answers to the content checklist (for example, whether there's strong language), and anything you write about what happens. Your answers and notes aren't public: we show only totals and what enough viewers agree on, and we use notes to describe the film in our own words, without your name, with the help of an AI model (see Anthropic below).
- Your watchlist: the titles you save. Only you can see it.
- Analysis requests: when you ask us to analyse a film, an anonymous ID in a cookie lets us count one request per visitor. It isn't linked to your account.
Why
To run your account and the features you use (contract), and to keep the community helpful and safe, for example by hiding comments that break the rules (legitimate interest). Your denomination is stored only because you consent to it, and you can withdraw that consent at any time.
Cookies
We use only the cookies the site needs: one to keep you signed in, and the anonymous request ID above. No advertising or tracking cookies.
Who else is involved
- Supabase stores the database, the login system and profile pictures.
- Vercel hosts the website.
- TMDB provides posters and film details; your browser loads images from them.
- bible-api.com provides the text of Bible passages when you open one.
- YouTube plays trailers, but only when you choose to watch one.
- Anthropic provides the AI model that helps write our analyses. When we update an analysis, it receives the notes viewers wrote about the film, without names or accounts, and doesn't use them to train its models.
Some of these providers are outside the EU; where they are, your data is protected by the EU's standard contractual clauses.
