Watch guide

What's in it?

LanguageOccasional mild swearing

Expect occasional mild and moderate swear words typical of the early series; no f-words.

BlasphemyIrreverent God talk

Lucifer speaks dismissively about his Father, and there are likely a few casual exclamations using God's name.

Sex and nudityInnuendo, implied sex

A party with suggestive behaviour and constant innuendo; Lucifer urges a young man who is waiting for marriage to sleep with a woman, and a sex tape of them is a plot point.

RelationshipsCasual sex encouraged

A young man's choice to save sex for marriage is treated as something to overcome, and his night with a woman leads to blackmail. He later reunites with his former girlfriend.

ViolenceMurder, attempted killing

A woman is found dead in a swimming pool, and there is an attempt on another woman's life. Lucifer intimidates people, and a man is threatened.

Frightening scenesBody, devil-face menace

A corpse floats in a pool, and Lucifer's menacing side is shown when he confronts an impostor.

Drugs and alcoholParty drinking

Heavy drinking at a house party and at Lucifer's nightclub, including a guest vomiting.

AttitudesTempting, lying, blackmail

Lucifer tempts others into indulgence and uses a police sting for his own ends; a sports agent schemes and blackmails, and his crimes are exposed.

OccultThe devil as hero

The devil is the charming lead with supernatural powers, and an impostor plays at being the Prince of Darkness. The series treats Satan sympathetically.

Faith & story

What does it say?

What's it about? The plot, without the ending

Lucifer Morningstar, the devil turned Los Angeles nightclub owner and police consultant, is asked for help by Ty Huntley, a young star quarterback. After a house party, Ty finds a dead woman in his swimming pool and cannot remember what happened. Lucifer brings in detective Chloe Decker, and their investigation reaches into the money and pressure of professional sport.

Through a faith lensHow it connects to the Bible

The plot of this episode centres on a young man hoping to hold off until he is married, and a smooth-talking devil who persuades him to abandon that plan. The Bible's picture of the tempter is closer to the serpent in Eden, who made disobedience sound reasonable and harmless. Here the tempting is played for laughs, but the consequences follow: a woman is dead and a good man is nearly ruined. Scripture treats sexual purity as a way of honouring one's body, not a joke to be overcome. The villain's scheme, killing and blackmailing to keep a client, echoes Ahab and Jezebel, who took what they wanted by deceit and violence. Hidden wrongdoing is eventually exposed, as Jesus said it would be. The show wants viewers to like the devil, though, and families may want to talk about the difference between a likeable tempter and a truthful one. Paul warned that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

Works of the flesh shown

Faithfulness appears in Ty's resolve to wait for marriage and in his loyalty to Debra, though Lucifer pushes him to give it up. The works of the flesh are far more visible. Sexual immorality and sensuality drive the party and the sex tape, while drunkenness and revelries fill the house party and the nightclub. Jealousy and idolatry show in the sports agent's grip on his star, since money and success are treated as everything. Hatred shows when the fixer sends a killer after a young woman. Self-control is the quality the story most clearly lacks, since Lucifer's whole approach is to encourage indulgence.

How Christians are portrayed

No Christians or churches appear in this episode. Faith comes up only through Lucifer's mocking remarks about his Father and the idea of a devil who is a charming, sympathetic hero, while a young man's wish to keep sex for marriage is played as a joke.
