A gang-tinged murder case gives Lucifer a chance to test his new mortality, with shootings, a brutal brawl and steady innuendo. Its likeable devil and casual view of sex need discernment.

Faith & story

What does it say?

What's it about? The plot, without the ending

Chloe asks Lucifer to help with a murder at a fashion show run by a high-end shoe designer who once belonged to a street gang. Lucifer, newly aware that he can be hurt, is keen to get close to the danger. Meanwhile Maze and Amenadiel's plans turn to Lucifer's therapist, Dr Linda.

Through a faith lensHow it connects to the Bible

This episode turns on a man who has just learned he can be hurt and so chases danger for the thrill of it. Scripture offers a different view of the body and of risk: Jesus refused to throw himself from the temple to test God's protection. The designer who stages a killing to make his shoes more desirable echoes the way the love of money drives people to harm others. His scheme shows that profit built on bloodshed puts innocent lives at risk, and the episode treats it as wrong. Amenadiel gets close to Linda by pretending to be someone he is not, which sits uneasily beside the call to put away falsehood and speak truthfully. Lucifer's contempt for his Father is played for charm, yet the Bible describes the Father as patient and merciful toward his rebellious children, as in the prodigal son's story. Families might ask what the story gains by making a rebel so likeable.

Works of the flesh shown

Love is shown mainly in Chloe, who cares for her daughter and works hard to protect people from a gang war. Hatred, strife and rivalries appear in the two street gangs, whose feud a designer deliberately inflames. Sexual immorality runs through Lucifer's casual arrangements, including the one with his therapist. Jealousy and rivalry lie behind the gang tension. Self-control is conspicuously missing in Lucifer's thrill-seeking.

How Christians are portrayed

No Christians or church appear. God is spoken of through Lucifer's mocking resentment of his Father and through Amenadiel's loyalty to heavenly orders, so faith serves as backdrop to a fantasy about angels and demons rather than as lived belief.
