Faith & story
What does it say?
What's it about? The plot, without the ending
Jesus sends the disciples out as pairs on a mission to heal people, expel demons and preach. When they return, they struggle to understand what has happened. At Simon's house, strain grows between him and Eden. Elsewhere, Jairus faces questions about Jesus as illness reaches his own household.
Through a faith lensHow it connects to the Bible
In this episode the disciples return from their first mission, having travelled in pairs to heal, expel demons and announce the kingdom. Jesus had given them that commission. Their difficulty making sense of what they saw echoes the Twelve returning with joy at what had happened, while still learning what it all meant. At home, Simon and Eden show that faithful service can strain a marriage, and that love has to be tended through patient listening. Jairus, a synagogue leader, comes to believe in Jesus while his own daughter lies ill. This anticipates the Gospel account of a father who came to Jesus on behalf of a twelve-year-old girl. Veronica's twelve years of suffering likewise matches the woman who reached out for healing in the same Gospel passage. Gaius, Shammai and the Sanhedrin show how power can respond with suspicion to what it cannot control. The episode ends unresolved, so the outcome is left for the viewer to see. It suggests that faith is tested in ordinary family life as well as in miracles.

- Peace
- Goodness
- Gentleness
Faithfulness is shown by the disciples, who carry out Jesus' commission and keep following him even when they do not understand what happened, and by Jairus, who professes belief at personal risk. Love appears in Jairus and Michal's anxious care for their sick daughter, and in Simon and Eden's wish to reconnect. Patience shows as Eden and Simon try to bridge the gap between them. Kindness is seen in the disciples' care for the sick, and Joy in their delight at the healings they witnessed. Strife and Divisions appear in the disciples' disagreements over what they experienced, in the tension in Simon's crowded home, and in the Sanhedrin's move against what it calls false prophecy. Self-control is the one fruit the episode puts under real pressure, as tempers fray at home.

How Christians are portrayed
Faith is treated warmly and honestly. The disciples are devoted but confused and sometimes quarrelsome, and Jairus's belief is shown as costly rather than easy. The religious establishment is a foil, wary of Jesus' movement, yet the episode shows its members as people rather than caricatures.
